A team of researchers led by Christopher Opie studied device families and flocks in 230 primate species that exist today. In particular, they were interested in the relationship between males and females, number of calves, their mortality, and other parameters related to demography.
The construction of a 'family tree' for all primates has allowed anthropologists to identify the most primitive forms of the family unit and to understand why they gave way to the traditional family.
As it turned out, more monogamy was caused by three factors: the care of the offspring, the nature of migration and female infanticide.
The calculations showed that the most likely cause of monogamy was the need to protect the offspring from the "attention" of other males, and not taking care of the offspring, as some anthropologists.
According to biologists, similar mechanisms might be involved in the transition of some birds and hoofed animals to live in pairs.
